Driving test simulator

The driving test simulator to use next to your permit practice test.

Yield is a free driving game for learner drivers in the US. You drive a real route through four-way stops, traffic lights, left turns, crosswalks and merges, with other cars and pedestrians moving, and it grades every move the way a road test examiner would. Ray, your instructor, tells you which rule you broke and what to do instead.

Free on iPhone, iPad and Android. No account. Plays offline.

The game seen from above: an all-way stop with cars arriving from three directions.

A practice test checks what you remember. A simulator checks what you do.

Permit practice test

  • Prepares you for the written test
  • Multiple choice, one question at a time
  • Asks who goes first at a four-way stop

Yield, the driving test simulator

  • Prepares you to use the rules on the road
  • Live traffic, at real speed
  • Puts you at the four-way stop, with three cars arriving

Study the handbook, take practice tests for the written exam, then drive the rules in Yield. It is practice, not driver's ed, and it does not replace supervised time behind a real wheel.

How it works

Graded like a road test.

  1. Waiting to turn left across two lanes of oncoming traffic, with Ray's bubble saying Turn left.
    1

    The examiner calls the turn

Ray tells you where to go before each junction, like an examiner on a road test. Getting into the right lane in time is part of the test.

  2. A four-lane city intersection with traffic lights and crosswalks, cars turning across it, the speedometer at 22 mph.
    2

    Traffic follows the rules too

Other drivers stop, wait their turn and take gaps, so the right move is the legal one, and the junction plays out differently every time.

  3. A fault card titled Cut off a driver, with a photo of the moment and Ray's explanation.
    3

    Every fault, explained

Rolling a stop sign, failing to yield, turning without a signal: each one is logged with a photo of the moment and the rule in plain words.

What you practice

The rules the road test checks.

Questions

Is Yield a driving test simulator?

Yes, a game-style one. You drive a car through US traffic from above, on your phone or tablet, and Yield grades you the way a road test examiner would: stopping at the line, yielding, picking the right lane, signaling, holding the speed limit. It is not a 3D cockpit simulator and it does not teach steering or the pedals of a real car.

Does it replace a DMV permit practice test?

No, use both. The written permit test is multiple choice, and question-based practice tests are the right tool for it. Yield covers the part they cannot: using the same rules at an intersection with other cars moving, which is what the behind-the-wheel test checks.

Which rules does it cover?

Four-way stops, traffic lights and right on red, unprotected left turns, crosswalks and pedestrians, turn signals, blocked lanes and merges, speed limits and work zones, lane choice for turns, yellow lights and DO NOT ENTER signs, as they work in the United States.

Does it follow my state's rules?

You pick your test state when you start. Where a rule is verified to differ by state, such as how long you wait for a pedestrian at an unsignaled crosswalk, Yield uses your state's version. Everywhere else it uses the stricter version, which is correct in every state. Your state's driver handbook is the one that counts.

Is it free?

Yes. Yield is free on the App Store and Google Play, with no in-app purchases and no subscription. A short ad can play when you tap Retry after a crash on the open road.

What do I need to play?

An iPhone or iPad on iOS 15 or later, or an Android phone or tablet. No account, and it plays offline. It is available in English and Spanish.

Who is it for?

Teens and adults studying for a learner's permit or a driver's license in the US, drivers new to the United States who already drive under other rules, and anyone who wants to brush up before a road test.

Knowing the rule is half of it.
Practice it at speed.
